American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP)

Also known as American's Senior Care Pharmacists, this organization is dedicated to the advancement of the practice of pharmaceutical care for the senior population and people with chronic illness. The year 2000 marked the first year for the ASCP student chapter at Mercer. All Pharm.D. students, residents, fellows, and graduate students are welcome to join.

Founded in 1852, the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) is the first-established and largest professional association of pharmacists in the United States. The Association is a leader in providing professional information and education for pharmacists and an advocate for improved health of the American public through the provision of comprehensive pharmaceutical care. APhA is to the pharmacist what the American Medical Association is to the physician.
The APhA Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) is the student section of APhA and is the largest student organization at Mercer University College of Pharmacy and Health Science representing over 75% of the entire student body.
The mission of the APhA-ASP is to be the collective voice of student pharmacists, to provide opportunities for professional growth, to improve patient care, and to envision and advance the future of pharmacy. The chapter works closely with the Georgia Pharmacy Association (GPhA), and membership with GPhA is included in membership with APhA-ASP. The organization provides numerous leadership opportunities within the chapter and at regional and national levels as well as national scholarships based on nomination or application.

Christian Pharmacist Fellowship International (CPFI)

CPFI is an interdenominational organization which provides an opportunity for students to meet together for Christian fellowship. A variety of speakers are presented at meetings including ministers from local churches, pharmacists, faculty members, and students. Occasionally CPFI sponsors lunches and other fellowship gatherings. CPFI is always open to and welcomes all students, faculty, and staff.

Council of Students (COS)

The Council of Students is the organization composed of and representing the student body acting as a liaison between faculty/administration and the students. It is comprised of the presidents and a COS representative from all student organizations and an elected representative from each class at the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The COS also has an executive council consisting of the president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and representative-at-large.

The Georgia Society of Health-System Pharmacists/American Society of Health-System Pharmacists are state and national organizations which promote the practice of pharmacy in organized health-care settings including areas outside of traditional hospital practice. Membership in these associations provide an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to the many different practice settings available as well as to meet pharmacists actively engaged in these diverse career paths.

Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC)

The Inter-Fraternity Council consists of three members from each of the professional pharmaceutical fraternities on campus. It is the student regulatory body for all member fraternities at the College. Its purpose is to provide for the general welfare; promote scholastic, professional, social and recreational activities; and insure the cooperation of its member fraternities. The IFC also acts to interpret the fraternity system of this college to the administration and faculty and to the community in order for the fraternities to function in an atmosphere of healthy approval from the University authorities and the general public.

Kappa Epsilon (KE) is a national pharmaceutical fraternity, and one of three professional fraternities at Mercer. The fraternity was founded on the basis of promoting women in pharmacy. The Alpha Delta chapter of KE at Mercer has a membership of over one hundred women pharmacy students. Also associated with the fraternity are eighteen big brothers, faculty associates, and faculty alumni members.

National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), Student Chapter

This organization is dedicated to preserving the practice of independent community pharmacy. The Mercer chapter of American College of Apothecaries (ACA) was chartered in 1978 as the first student chapter. In 1991, the Mercer chapter became the first combined ACA/NARD (National Association of Retail Druggists) Chapter. In 1996, the chapter adopted the NCPA name. All students are encouraged to become members and participate in activities which include visiting local independent community pharmacies; providing community health services; and bridging the gap between the academic and practical aspects of pharmacy. Members are kept aware of current topics in the practice of pharmacy through numerous publications from the parent organization.

Phi Delta Chi (PDC) is a national pharmaceutical fraternity composed of both male and female members. PDC is the only co-ed fraternity at the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The Alpha Rho chapter of PDC has an average membership of sixty-five. Also part of the fraternity are faculty associates and faculty alumni members.

The fundamental objective of Rho Chi has always been to promote the advancement of the pharmaceutical sciences through the encouragement and recognition of sound scholarship. High standards of intellectual and scholarly attainments have been demanded for election to membership. All candidates selected for membership must have completed ten quarters, or the equivalent, of scholastic work applicable toward a professional pharmacy degree. They must be in the top twenty percent of their class and have attained a "B" average in both their overall college/university pre-professional coursework and in their professional pharmacy college coursework.
