Community Pharmacy Residency Program

Goals

The Community Pharmacy Residency Program is offered by Mercer University in Atlanta, Georgia. The fundamental goal of the residency is to provide a structured and advanced education and training experience for pharmacists whose ability, motivation, and career aspirations suggest potential for creative and innovative leadership in community pharmacy practice. Education and training will be concentrated in the areas of (1) administration and management; (2) drug information; (3) asthma, diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia disease state management; (4) adult immunizations; (5) developing, implementing, and marketing innovative services; (6) drug therapy management; (7) research; (8) academia and (9) areas of special interest. Provision of pharmaceutical care will be the primary focus of this community pharmacy residency.

General Criteria

The community pharmacy serves as the base for instruction of the resident and should be viewed as a teaching facility in addition to a location for the provision of contemporary pharmacy services. The community pharmacy site must meet the following criteria:

  • The pharmacy will have management and staff who have adopted pharmaceutical care as their primary practice model/philosophy, who seek excellence in professional practice, and who possess a commitment to pharmacy education.

  • The pharmacy will have adequate professional staff, and supportive technical and clerical staff, to meet the learning objectives and to provide for optimum time for preceptor/resident interaction.

  • The pharmacy will possess an adequate library that includes current references needed to provide optimum patient care. Pharmaceutical and medical literature containing primary, secondary, and tertiary sources, and computerized databases will be available.

  • The pharmacy shall be free of any state, federal, professional, or civil legal violation for which a penalty has been imposed, and shall not have any pharmacist as a preceptor who has been involved in any legal action involving professional conduct.

  • In the event that the pharmacy site is not adequate for a specific resident activity, the residency director and preceptors will arrange for alternative training sites.
